It all started with...
A love for space and aeronautics! At a young age, I had decided to be either an astronaut or, if that didn't work out, Plan B was to become an architect. [Spoiler alert - I didn't become either.]
My father and I shared an interest in the space industry, and when I was around 10 years old, he took me to the Children's Museum of Science to meet a real astronaut!
A bundle of nervous excitement was twisting in my stomach, and I had stars in my eyes as I listened to Guion 'Guy' Bluford Jr., the first African American astronaut to travel to space, speak about his experiences. Towards the end of his talk, he said something so emphatically that the words themselves seemed to carry the magic of the cosmos, and it has forever inspired me.
He said, “I worked towards something that I love to do… and [with a laugh] … I found a way to get paid while doing it!”
This concept of discovering something you love, working for it, and creating a career out of it has been my true north ever since and guides my achievements. This statement has become a quiet voice on my shoulder guiding every career decision.
We spend more time at work than we do with our loved ones. Given that reality, it has always been important to me to support a healthy work/life balance, not only for myself but also for others. I strongly believe that we all deserve the opportunity to thrive in a work environment.
Over the course of my career, I have challenged myself to identify jobs, tasks, and projects that inspire me. Looking for something that I love to do and get paid to do it.
I started my career in Human Resources to train individuals to become successful in their jobs by transferring knowledge and developing their skillset. I also believed this department was a good place to support a healthy work/life culture. I realized I preferred training and development over the other tasks and responsibilities within HR.
I transitioned my career and enjoyed over 10 years at a Fortune 200 company, training and coaching over 70,000+ global leaders.
I am a Master Certified Performance and Execution Management Coach. I have successfully coached leaders to identify business opportunities and gaps, develop successful strategies, and consistently execute goal achievement.
In my ninth year, I was named among the top 4% of achievers at this Fortune 200 company. [I may have been nicknamed Super Woman by my colleagues! Side note, 'Achiever' happens to be my second talent according to CliftonStrengths.]
After this achievement, I was ready to take on a new challenge. There were many aspects that I loved about this job. However, there were also many aspects that fully drained me and required more energy to execute. I was good at these things, but I wanted to focus on the tasks and activities I excelled at.
I asked myself...
What do I love to do? Where do I want to take my career? What is missing now that I could create or find in a different role? How and where could I find value and meaning in my life's work again?
I started a quest to understand my strengths and identify what value and meaning looked like for me. I started with volunteering but still felt like something was missing. After a few other failed attempts, a light bulb went off! I could apply my execution coaching processes to my own personal development!
After two years of discovery and application, I identified my core strengths, root causes behind my proudest accomplishments and opportunities and developed consistent strategies to execute my purpose-driven goals and create meaningful experiences!
It's through this discovery that I created Bold-Bird Consulting and organically pivoted my experience in being a Performance Improvement and Execution Strategist Coach into building my own business. I'm passionate about 'gaming' life and identifying how to infuse fun, value, and a sense of purpose into achieving success and, ultimately, happiness. This passion continues as I share my knowledge and expertise to help people identify their own strengths and how to achieve their bold goals!
I was recently rummaging through some old files and came across a yellowed stack of papers in a clear protected sheet. It was an assignment I wrote as a teenager, "All About Me!"
Here are some experts from what I wrote:
I am a very unique person who is different from everyone else. I have different qualities from everyone in the world. There is not one person just like me. I learn at different rates than others, I dress differently, and act differently from others too! All around I am different and unique! That's what makes me so special!
A very unique characteristic I admit to having is being weird. It's a fun characteristic to have and I'm proud to have it! Being weird helps me be who I am. I like being myself because I'm comfortable with who I am.
In the future, I hope to be seeing myself with a husband and two kids with a successful career. My greatest hope is to be successful in anything I put my mind to. I also hope my children and husband will be successful too.
I'm a very outgoing special person. When you compare a person to me, I am an individual with a great self knowing that I love myself for who I am. Nobody can change this fact in my life!!
I was reminded of a simpler time, a raw time of self-discovery as a teen, and was amazed by the self-reflective confidence and awareness of what makes me unique. It put a smile on my face! [Interestingly, I do have a husband and two amazing daughters!]
We each have what it takes to create a life of fulfillment and purpose. We just need to find it or rediscover it! And, it will be different from everyone else's version. Own it, weirdness and all!
Life is what you make it. Live it boldly and achieve your potential by maximizing your strengths and creating personally enriching opportunities.
